In Discussion board 2 we are covering Voltaire’s “Candide” along with Japanese Picaresque: Saikaku’s “The Life of a Sensuous Woman” and Haiku (read the Haiku pp. 679-694–focusing on the haiku in the sequence, feel free to reference the other haiku poets if you wish as well, and review the course lecture material in Content for this week’s texts). We’ll also cover Romantic Egoism with Rousseau’s “Confessions,” and we’ll start off the Romantic poets with Blake (pp. 309-320). You should post on at least two elements from the material, but remember that you are responsible for reading all of it, and for the content area lectures (which will be assessed in quizzes and exams).
Be sure to respond to at least two of your classmates across the life of the discussion. Try not to just summarize or paraphrase these texts. Find something interesting to say about our readings, and think about what we are seeing in these texts that bears on the modern world.
