Due date: October 3rd by 11:55 PM. Please submit your assignment in the appropriate Assignment submission folder. Do not email me your assignment. Please use Wordand 12 point font. Please also remember to include a properly formatted Works Cited page.
After the due date, you may still submit your essay through the assignment submission area, but it will be marked as late and lose 5% per day, including weekend days.
In a well-organized close reading essay of about 450-700words (no, this word count does not include the Works Cited page), develop your interpretation of one of the following two poems. Essays that do not meet the minimum length requirement will not pass. Your thesis (your central claim) must the last sentence of your introductory paragraph.
What poetic devices strike you as central to conveying the poem’s meaning? Be sure to have a clear thesis that identifies the form and/or poetic devices used and the central meaning they convey. Develop your interpretation of the poem, paying attention to form, poetic devices and content.
You need to support your claims (your thesis and topic sentences) with evidence (examples or quotations) and analysis (interpretation). Remember that your thesis is your main claim and that each topic sentence will refer to an aspect of your thesis. Essays that give mainly quotationsor retell the events and lack analysis will fail; so too will essays that lack a thesis or lack compelling evidence.
Be sure to have a clear thesis that identifies the poetic devices used and articulates the central meaning they convey. Choose the most significant devices, and DO NOT SIMPLY WRITE AN ESSAY THAT LIST VARIOUS DEVICES AND EXAMPLES OF THOSE DEVICES. Why and how are the devices tied to the meaning of the poem? Keep your analysis tied to your thesis.
I am interested in YOUR reading of the poem so do notconsult outside sources for this assignment. If your essay contains ideas or words that are taken from outside sources (not your own ideas about the poem itself) then you are plagiarizing and your essay will receive a grade of 0 and a report will be sent to the Dean of Students. Every semester I recognize ideas and words taken from online sources but presented as the students’ own ideas/words, so do not be tempted! If this is your first academic offence, a notation will be made on your record. If it is not your first offence, other penalties will apply.
Structure:
Please remember that your thesis and topic sentences must contain claims, and that your body paragraphs should contain both evidence and analysis, with more weight given to the analysis.
Introductory Paragraph: What is this poem about? What is the essence of the poem? What is the poet communicating? (ideas, concerns, themes…) Narrow your focus, express the theme of the poem, and have a specific thesis that ties a poetic device (s) or aspect of form to the meaning (theme).
Body Paragraphs: Focus on showing how particular techniques/devices convey the central concerns of the poem.
Conclusion: Be sure to include a paragraph that sums up your main points and demonstrates that you have proven your thesis. Use different words to echo your thesis.
