The first step is to pick an environmental issue to analyze for your presentation.
The goal of this presentation is to take an environmental issue, and analyze it from a
sociological perspective, as a structural issue. For example, many students in the
past have presented about Hurricane Katrina, which is often portrayed in the press
as a natural disaster or a weather event. However, as sociologists, we complicate
this issue by analyzing the ways in which the hurricane can be understood as a
structural issue – by examining, for example, how structural issues such as poverty,
racism, housing discrimination, politics, etc. all intersected to make an
environmental event – a hurricane – into a social and environmental disaster. Pick a
topic that seems the most interesting or relevant to you, that you have a pressing
curiosity about.
