Part:1 Group4: Ski Area
You are a group of environmental planners examining the impacts of pumping groundwater for a certain use that will be assigned to each group later. You will create two profiles of the landform for both lines “A” and “B.” You will be given three numbers that represent, respectively in order, the elevation of the natural water table, as well as elevation of the water table due to pumping groundwater for a 50 acre piece of land and 100 acres of land. In the profiles, you will include the topography, the natural water table, and the water table drawdown for 50 acres and 100 acres. You will delineate the estimated “area of influence” on the map based on the cone of depression. Delineating this “area of influence” on one of your models with pins may be helpful to see. You will then assess and determine which surface water features will be impacted. You will create a presentation as a group in this Google Slides file. Your presentation should be less than 10 minutes and will be given in class. Please include the following components in your presentation: What is groundwater? What are the impacts of an altered depth to water table? What is the impact of water pumping? Profiles ”A” and “B” delineated on one of the models Profiles ”A” and “B” (including topography, natural water table, 50 acres and 100 acres of terrain) Area of influence on the map and a model for both 50 and 100 acres of terrain. Make a recommendation for whether this use (50 or 100 acres) should be approved. Consider environmental and ecological impacts as well as the services the land use may provide to the human population or the ecosystem. Propose ideas or solutions to reduce the impact when using this much water. Profile A MW1 – 640, 640, 640 MW2 – 645, 645, 645 MW3 – 620, 620, 600 MW4 – 620, 620, 590 MW5 – 620, 620, 585 MW6 – 680, 660, 580 MW7 – 735, 700, 575 W – 820, 620, 450 MW8 – 875, 725, 600 MW9 – 930, 825, 700 MW10 – 930, 880, 825 MW11 – 880, 880, 800 Profile B MW12 – 840, 840, 840 MW13 – 810, 810, 810 MW14 – 780, 780, 780 MW15 – 760, 760, 750 MW16 – 780, 780, 710 MW17 – 810, 780, 660 MW18 – 825, 750, 580 W – 820, 640, 450 MW19 – 850, 770, 600 MW20 – 835,810, 700
Part:2
For the second phase of this presentation you will investigate surface water on the site and how your proposed land use may impact surface water. See the assigned Land Uses for each group below. The proposed land development is the red parcel on the western border of Connecticut on the map attached. Instructions: You are a group of environmental planners that will testify as expert witnesses in a lawsuit between the State of Connecticut and the New York City Water Company. You will make a recommendation for whether a proposed organic winery could be permitted and, if so, in what capacity, location, and with what design recommendations. On the attached map, you will see a parcel of land (red shape) that will be used for the organic winery in the State of Connecticut. The lake with the “red X,” that is dammed, is a drinking supply lake owned by the New York City Water Company. Make sure to include all possible ramifications of the organic winery (as it relates to the topics covered in this course). Also a certain requirement will be to delineate the watershed for the New York City Water Company Lake with the “red X”.
