Discussion Question – Are you able to interact personally with your physician, or is he (or she) constantly looking at your chart on a computer. Do you make eye contact? When the doctor enters the room, does he (or she) seem to know who you are or do you have to “fill in the blanks” about your background and present concerns. Research indicates that the average American physician spends approximately 5 minutes in personal interaction with their patient. Interestingly, a P.A. (Physician’s Assistant) spends over 11 minutes with each patient. Discuss how important personal interaction with your physician is to you – do you have it, or do you wish you did? (Special Note: In terms of Doctor/Patient interaction, you might want to consider this factor in your consideration of the “Mama Might Be Better Off Dead” assignment. Consider the quality of interaction that Mrs. Banes had with the physicians treating “Mama”. This is a great angle to use in your upcoming book review (due during Finals Week).
