The chapters within these sections facilitate a deeper dive into the work of advocacy and promoting social change. For your assignment this week, you will focus specifically on one of the topics of your readings and create an advocacy campaign championing a cause related to your chosen chapter and topic. See more information below and in the “Assignment” tab (under “Assessments”). Since next week is our Fall Break, this assignment will not be due until Wednesday, October 13th at 11:59 PM. I hope you all enjoy some much-needed downtime! This week’s assignment will be based upon the readings from The Impossible, Sections One and Two. In each section, you are introduced to stories surrounding such concepts as hope, courage, or perseverance. Your task is to focus on one of these stories in order to create an advocacy campaign surrounding one of the key ideals or principles highlighted by the story. Here are a few examples: • Kozo‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍l’s “Ordinary Resurrections”: Ordinary dyings, ordinary resurrections, needless deaths • Edelman’s “Standing Up for Children”: Children as our future, indifference to injustice, the powerless vs. the powerful • Mandela’s “The Dark Years”: Political isolation, oppression, multiplication of courage • Pipher’s “Reluctant Activists”: Global warming, climate change, perseverance Using the Community Toolbox’s “Getting an Advocacy Campaign Off the Ground,” create a 1-2 page advocacy campaign that should cover at least the following: 1. The story and author you chose, and the specific topic you are advocating either for or against; 2. Why you chose your topic or issue; 3. The steps involved in your advocacy campaign; 4. What other resources or allies will you need in order to be successful with your campaign.
