Recent rainfall hasn’t helped out farmers in the Mid-West, because this year’s crop is already gone. But the rain has helped lower drought levels in some states and it still might help crops mature. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has predicted that 2012 will have the lowest corn per acre since 1995. More than half of the nation’s corn crop is listed as poor and farmers have planted the most corn since 1937. Despite all the negatives, this year’s crop is predicted to be the eighth largest crop on record.
This article is a human-environment interaction. The farmers work the land to grow crops to feed cattle which feed humans. The farmers changed the landscape by clearing land and by growing huge fields of one crop. The drought is also a human-environment interaction. Scientists believe that climate change is caused by excessive amounts of carbon dioxide do to human’s using fossil fuels. Because of human induced climate change it caused the Mid-West to receive less rainfall, which hurts the farmer’s yields. This is a regional issue because if the grain harvest is small it will affect the supply to the rest of the country. Food and fuel prices will increase. The article is also globalization. America’s grain harvest is interconnected throughout the world. The drought affects food supply and drives up prices globally.
This article relates to me because my family farms around 400 acres and we have been hit hard by the drought. Earlier this summer our corn looked terrific and we thought we were going to have a good year, but we counted our chickens before they hatched.
