Learning Goal: I’m working on a microbiology writing question and need a reference to help me learn.good lab report not easy , but it is valuable scientific skill . In addition to the quality of the scientific content, the writing style and format are critical for effective scientific communication . General guidelines are listed below . The points assigned for each section are shown in brackets . Note that these lab reports will be graded rigorously, with points assigned for both format and content. Name and Date : Write your name and the date at the top of the first page of the lab report. Guidelines for Writing Lab Report “Identification of Enterobacteriaceae” Introduction ( ): The Introduction should (i) explain the background for the experiments described in the paper (eg, what type of bacteria were expected in the sample, what are the general properties of each of these groups , etc ) , ( ii ) give a very brief overview of the approach used to identify the unknown bacteria and why ( eg , “The bacteria were identified by cytology and metabolic tests …” ), and ( iii ) very briefly mention the conclusion of the paper (eg, “Based upon these results, the unknown culture was Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium.”). Materials and Methods: The Materials and Methods section should suscinetly describe what was actually done in a narrative, not a numerical series of steps as in an experimental protocol. It should include sufficient description of the techniques used that it is clear to the reader what experiments were done and how (not what was written in the protocol, but what you actually did). The details of the protocol do not need to be reproduced in the text but an appropriate reference should be cited – e.g. , simply indicate , Gram stains were done as described by Gram ( 1 ). Any changes from the protocol provided in the text handouts should be described. It is not appropriate to indicate volumes of solutions added – instead indicate the relevant information about the experiment such as final concentrations used , etc. Results): Begin each paragraph with an opening sentence that tells the reader what property is being tested in the experiments described in that paragraph and why . Write the opening sentence in bold font for emphasis . but the style should be used consistently throughout the report.) Any results that include multiple data points that are critical for the reader to evaluate the experiment should be shown in tables or figures. However, the results should be summarized in accompanying text. that when referring to a particular table or figure , they should be capitalized: Table 1, Figure 6 , etc.) The text of the Results section s should be succinct but should provide the reader with a summary of the results of each table figure . Not all results deserve table or figure . As a rule of thumb , if there are only a few numerical
