For your discussion, consider either Pinsky’s discussion of a department’s adoption Fayol’s 14 Principles of Management or the description of the 6 organizational principles by Dias and Vaughn.  Apply at least two of the principles to what you’ve experienced in a public safety organization or what you’ve read about a public safety organization.  The readings are applicable to all disciplines and, therefore, you shouldn’t need to choose the article to match the discipline.
Consider choosing one of the more obscure principles to make connections that may foster more discussion.
You may choose to discuss how application of the principle is lacking and how applying the principle would lead to better outcomes.
You may also choose to explain how the principle is applied appropriately and discuss the positive outcomes related to that.
Finally, you may argue that the principle was rejected, either without ill effects or with positive outcomes.
Your responses can add to your classmates’ position or respectfully challenge it.  I would suggest that you be discreet and not mention an agency with which you’ve had personal dealings by name or describe it sufficiently that it can be identified.

Assignment two
Both authors of our readings from week four discuss how basic management principles apply to public safety organizations and how straying from those principles can cause organizational failures.
In the work of Clarissa Dias and Michael Vaughn, the authors use examples from case studies to demonstrate how “administrative breakdown and managerial disorganization” can be analyzed through the lenses of six organizational elements.
For assignment two, you will discuss each organizational element and your experiences with the application of the organizational element in an organization, preferably a bureaucracy, with which you’ve been involved.  Depending on the element, your may have experienced efficient and effective use of the element, administrative breakdown because of ineffective or inappropriate use of the element, or something in between.  The goal is to synthesize the author’s explanation of the organizational element and supplement that with your own experiences and, if necessary, outside academic sources.  Because the elements discussed are present in all sorts of organizations, it should not be necessary for you to have been involved in a public safety organization to complete the assignment.  If you have no personal experiences related to the organizational element, you can supplement the authors discussion with research which may include interviewing someone who has had such experiences.  The organizational elements are:
Goals and Objectives
Division of Labor
Hierarchy of Authority
Command and Control
Accountability
Communication
Your instructor will be looking for you to use critical thinking skills, demonstrate that you understand the concepts of organizational elements, and for you to make thoughtful connections between the theory and real world experiences.
Your paper should be 4-6 pages (not including work cited or cover page), double spaced, 1” margins, and use two outside academic sources beyond the paper that is the object of the assignment (a source used by the author of the object paper may be appropriate).  Your paper should have a conclusion section in which you summarize what you’ve learned from the assignment.
All academic submissions require a title page and reference section, both of which do not count towards your total page requirement.

From the text on the history of one or more disciplines, fire, police, or EMS, discuss some aspect of the history of the discipline that you found most surprising and/or which you believe is not widely understood—either within or outside of the discipline.
See if you can draw any parallels between how an issue was handled historically and how it is handled today.
Finally, is there an aspect of how issues were handled historically that you can see as being potentially better than the way we handle them today or, perhaps, does the history of how an issue was handled lead you to better understand why it is handled the way it is today?

Topic essay- The bulk of the work for this course will be comprised of a progressive paper, analyzing the process by which a policy was changed or modified.  This essay is a short 2-3 page double spaced discussion of the policy change you are selecting to analyze.  The policy change can be at any level of government (national, state, or local), but I encourage you to analyze a policy episode that makes sense for professional development purposes (i.e., a policy episode in the town or county you reside).  This paper should briefly introduce the policy issue to be analyzed, briefly summarize the history behind the particular policy change instance you will be considering, and should include a clear description of the policy venue (i.e., bureaucratic decision by the EPA or a city council decision by the City of Raleigh) you will analyze.  Essays should utilize citations where appropriate.
In addition to your topic proposal, students should include a list of five authoritative sources (i.e., government databases, government meeting records, government documents, professional association reports, think tank reports, academic articles, etc.) for gathering information about the policy episode. You only need to list these sources at this point in time utilizing APA format.
