During May, we celebrate Nurses’ Week and often we will celebrate how nurses are respected and have grown as a profession. One area that is often highlighted is the working conditions that were expected of nurses. For example, one nursing magazine stated: “Daily shifts ran from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., during which time you were expected to be in your ward. You did, however, get a break on Sundays. You were allowed to have two hours off between noon and 2 p.m. If you were a graduate nurse in good standing with the director of nurses, you could be granted one evening off per week “for courting purposes,” two evenings off if you were a regular church-goer.” (Scrubs, 2016). Wow….Could you imagine working those shifts? So, in our reading, Fallow & McConnell (2021) discusses some laws that changed the work environment. What law changed work hours? What else did it do and how does it affect us today?

Unit III: Peer Evaluation
“Peer review is the process by which one assesses, monitors and makes judgments about the quality of care provided to patients by other peers as measured against established standards of practice.”- ANA 1983
Choose an example of a peer evaluation tool (provide reference) and answer the following:
Does it reflect the values and competencies presented in Picker-Rotem, Schneider, Wasserzug, & Zelker (2008, p. 917)?
Discuss how the following situation does or does not exemplify an appropriate peer evaluation process. How would you address this nursing situation?
You have newly joined a three-member committee on your unit responsible for completing the peer evaluations of your colleagues. The first two evaluations went smoothly. The committee followed the approved evaluation criteria and successfully reached agreements on the initial evaluations.Today, the committee is meeting to work on the yearly peer evaluation of Jacob, one of your coworkers.Jacob has been employed in your hospital for five years as an RN and has worked on your unit for the past year. When you bring out the evaluation form, Lisa, another committee member, slams down her fist on the conference table.
“What’s wrong?” you ask.
Lisa says, “We really don’t need to go through this form item-by-item.Everyone knows Jacob is a jerk.I worked with him four years ago over in Med-Surg and he was a nightmare. We just need to cut to the chase and give him the lowest score”.
Despite your attempt to focus the discussion on the criteria set forth in the unit’s peer evaluation process, Lisa is adamant in her insistence that Jacob receive a poor evaluation.Pat, the other member of the committee, has sat ashen faced and silent since Lisa made her initial outburst. Finally, Lisa says she will refuse to sign the form unless the committee complies with her demands.

Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:
• Textbook: Chapter 8
• Play from the Internet, YouTube, DVD, iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, etc.
• 1 primary source (written version of selected play)
Instructions
Plays are meant to be performed, rather than read. The purpose of dramatic arts often extends far beyond the words written on a page; staging, lighting, costumes intonation, expression, and audience experience are all part of the experience of a theatrical production. To develop your understanding of the cultural role of the dramatic arts, you will view a production of a play this week and write a reflection to explain your viewing experience. Choose a play that you would like to view and find a version online, YouTube, DVD or iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, etc. You can also choose to see a play live if you prefer.
Play Suggestions:
• A Midsummer Night’s Dream
• Romeo and Juliet
• As You Like It
• Taming of the Shrew
• The Tempest
• Much Ado About Nothing
• The Comedy of Errors
• Macbeth
• King Lear
If you have another idea, please ask your instructor to approve it.
Then, select and address one of the following options:
Option 1: Write an analysis of the play that you viewed. Include at least one quote from the play in your essay. In your essay, address the following:
• Identify the performance that you have selected.
• Describe the staging, lighting, costumes, and characters of the performance. How do these match or revise the written version of the play? You do not need to read the entire play, but you should skim the text.
• What type of mood and tone does the performance create? How?
• What parts of the play are easier to understand through performance? What are some details that stood out through performance?
• What are your feelings about this performance? What did you take away from viewing it?
• Writing Requirements (APA format)
