Up to this point, you have carefully gathered, evaluated, analyzed, summarized, assessed, and reflected upon your research sources. It is now time to begin drafting the research essay. This assignment will guide you through the planning and drafting processes for your research paper, and will allow you to receive instructor feedback before submitting the final draft of your research project.
Assignment Requirements
Section 1: Select a substantial portion of your research paper to draft and insert into the assignment. This could be anything: the introduction and following body paragraphs, the body paragraphs/support from which you are going to build the rest of the essay, or the last several paragraphs of your research paper including the conclusion. This section should be no less than 2 pages, not including the Works Cited page. Supporting evidence from at least 2 of your sources should be incorporated and properly documented both within the text and on the Works Cited page.
Section 2: After you have inserted the rough draft of your research paper, write a paragraph explaining what part of your research paper you are working with and what you hope the reader takes away from it.
Section 3: In a final paragraph, discuss what you are going to do in the writing and editing process to complete your research paper. You may want to anticipate the following questions in your discussion: What do I have left to write? How can I improve the drafted portion of my paper? What kind of information do I need to include to finalize the paper? Do I need more sources? How will I focus the remaining paragraphs?
The goal of this assignment is to allow you to begin drafting the research paper in a meaningful way so that the final product is as complete and polished as possible.
Rules for formal and academic writing apply to the draft. (Note: First person point-of-view is allowed in the final two discussion paragraphs.)

We know that the classroom is not the only place where students learn (Long, 2012). Students learn from experiences inside and outside of the classroom. Some examples of experiences out of the classroom are being a part of a student club, Greek life, being an athlete, or living in the dorms. Students encounter different learning experiences when they are part of the campus community. Long (2012) stated, “Student learning takes place in a classroom, but the college or university itself is the classroom” (p. 1). In other words, students continue to learn even if they are not in a classroom setting. Student support is crucial in helping students achieve a positive college experience both in and out of the classroom. The purpose of student affairs is to help students become successful by offering several support services to students outside of the classroom setting. These support services enhance students’ overall educational experience. Support services such as the health center, counseling, admissions, disability services, and many other services allow students to have a support system to help them be the best version of themselves. When we support the whole student, we are working with them as an individual, and we have to remember that no one student is like another. Students are all unique in their own way. We have to ask students hard questions and get to know them at a deeper level to help them understand what challenges they are facing. With the uptick in the mental health crisis and the pandemic, our students face more challenges than ever. It is important for us, as educators, to be able to guide students to the proper support services to help them succeed.
Glanzer et al. (2020) stated that we simply cannot understand the whole student without understanding God and our relationship to God. A dedicated student affairs professional acknowledges that the student is the heart of student affairs. Therefore, we must care about the whole student. This means that student affairs professionals should provide a holistic approach when helping students.

The profession of student affairs has grown to accommodate changing cultures and generations, particularly since the 1960s and 1970s (Long, 2012). Since then, the field of student affairs has rooted itself in student development theories to inform the way institutions attend to students beyond the classroom. Student affairs professionals are called to help the students at a college or university in a variety of ways. Student affairs departments may vary slightly between institutions but an underlying theme is to support students’ well-being. Long identifies values for student affairs professionals to maintain to serve students well. Some values include caring for students as individual people, advocating for social justice equality, and enhancing the community at-large to promote belonging.
In order to promote well-being, student affairs professionals support students in a variety of ways. According to Preston et al. (2021), most student affairs professionals have supported students who had experienced trauma. Trauma impacts people in a variety of ways, including symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which can inhibit an individual’s ability to meet his or her basic needs. The difficulty with meeting one’s own basic needs may negatively affect academics, work, interpersonal relationships, and other aspects of one’s life. Because things like trauma can interfere with a student’s well-being, it is critical for student affairs staff to understand how to attune to students’ needs so they can go on to have a successful college experience.
On a deeper level, Christians have a higher calling to serve one another. Student affairs presents an opportunity to serve others in an impactful way. In Matthew 25, Jesus explained The Final Judgment, where He reminded His disciples, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (New International Version, 2011/1973, Matt. 25:40). Jesus’ words continue to speak to His followers now, where we as Christians can work hard to take care of each other. The mentality of service was important on Jesus’ time on earth, and is a helpful model to use even today in the field of student affairs.
