Assignment 2: A Critical Exploration of Public Art Due at end of Week 5 | 20 Po

Assignment 2: A Critical Exploration of Public Art Due at end of Week 5 | 20 Points
First, you will read 4 (brief) articles:
https://www.cnn.com/style/article/power-and-politics-of-installation-art/index.html
https://www.kcet.org/shows/artbound/what-is-the-role-of-public-art-in-creating-a-sense-of-a-city
https://www.widewalls.ch/magazine/richard-serra-tilted-arc
NYT article attached as PDF: “In New York and More, Public Art is Taking on Thorny Social Issues” (PDF attached in the Week 5 folder)
While reading these articles, internally consider: Can public art be neatly defined as a category? What are some definitions of public art according to the articles? What is the purpose of public art – is there more than one purpose? What role does public art serve?
What matters more – the intention of the designer/artist, or how the public/audience experiences the work? Is there nuance to this?
For the assignment submission, you will write a paper.
The paper should consider both the broad topic of public art and one specific case study. This means you will select one piece of public art (local for you or international/well-known) to analyze in your critical exploration of public art. You do not have to have seen the artwork in person.
Public art must be freely accessible to the public (no cost to view) and in a public viewing space. This does not include art situated within institutions/buildings which one must pay to enter. Do not choose a piece of artwork located in a museum.
The paper should include:
What you believe the purpose of public art is. Is there a singular purpose, or can there be multiple purposes to public art? What makes something public art? This should involve referencing specific points from the articles (and citing what you used).
A photo of the public artwork which you have chosen (your case study).
The title, artist, date, and location of your case study.
Identify for the case study: The purpose of the specific work – what were the artist intentions in creating this piece of art? This may require some digging.
How the work fits into its environment – what is its physical context? Why is it in that specific place? What about the artwork’s content makes it appropriate for that space?
How does the public interact with the artwork? Does the public like it or dislike it?
Your opinion on the work – do you like it? Do you think its effective in its space? Does the work serve the purpose designed by the artist?
Formatting: Paper should be 2 – 5 pages, size 12 font, and double spaced.
Citations should be in parentheses after quotes or references within paragraphs. References at the end of the paper should list the articles assigned to read for this assignment.
You should use an approved manual of style for listing your citations. APA format .

For this assignment, write a 4-5 page, double-spaced paper (with separate cover

For this assignment, write a 4-5 page, double-spaced paper (with separate cover and bibliography/notes page), using the standard essay format, comparing these two images: Jacob Lawrence’s The Library, 1960 with Miguel Cabrera’s Portrait of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, c. 1750.
Consider the formal elements of color, space and line in these paintings. How does each of these elements inform or influence the deeper content and meaning of these works? Also, take into consideration when the images were made (their context). Does this influence or affect our reading of them? For example, Lawrence’s image was part a series of works that documented the lives of Black Americans’ relationship to libraries, whereas Cabrera’s image is a posthumous portrait of the poet. The time period in which these images were created is important to how to understand them. Explain.
Note: Your paper should be written in the third person—a more objective mode of presentation than the first person. This paper must follow all the guidelines set out in the syllabus. Please use standard Chicago style format and cite at least two sources in your paper. Please turn it in as a Word .doc file or a PDF.
Late papers will be reduced one full grade for each day late.

Do you agree with Ingeborg Majer O’Sickey’s claim that, in the final episode, Lola has become “a deflated heroine” (131) as the movie “deliver[s] the couple into a happy ending in the tradition of classical Hollywood cinema’s economy of desire” (130)? If yes, why is that so? If no, what counter-argument could be presented? What type of female heroine is Lola in this and in the other episodes? How is she portrayed? Give specific examples from the film that support your argument.

You only need to select one artwork from the choices below. Describe concretely what you are looking at and then relate what you see to the title. Is the connection clear or is the artist asking us to envision something? Is it a little of both? This is an opportunity for you to apply any of the formal vocabulary we’ve developed so far- including the use of line, composition, depth, and/or color. If you choose one of the sculptural works consider what it might be like to move around the work in actual space, and how the changing perspective might inform the work’s effect. In your own words describe the process of abstraction–what is it? Is this a skill, an approach, or a way of seeing you could apply to your life outside of art class? Do not finish the sheet. It’s just for reference for some terms related to the writing.

Directions for writing the film review:
″1) Introduction – – In the opening of your review, provide some basic information about the film. You may include film’s name, year, director, screenwriter, and major actors. Your introduction, which may be longer than one paragraph, should also begin to evaluate the film, and it should allude to the central concept of the review. A film review does not have to contain a thesis or main claim, but it should focus on a central analysis and assessment. 2) Plot Summary – Remember that many readers of film reviews have not yet seen the film. While you want to provide some plot summary, keep this brief and avoid specific details that would spoil the viewing for others. 3) Desсrіption – While the plot summary will give the reader a general sense of what the film is about, also include a more detailed desсrіption of your particular cinematic experience watching the film. This may include your personal impression of what the film looks, feels, and sounds like. In other words, what stands out in your mind when you think about this particular film? 4) Analysis – In order to explain your impression of the film, consider how well the film utilizes formal techniques and thematic content. How do the film’s formal techniques (such as cinematography, editing, mise-en-scène, lighting, diegetic and non-diegetic sound, genre, or narrative) affect the way the film looks, feels, and sounds to you? How does the thematic content (such as history, race, gender, sexuality, class, or the environment) affect your experience and interpretation? Also, do the formal techniques work to forward the thematic content? 5) Conclusion/Evaluation – The closing of your film review should remind the reader of your general thoughts and impressions of the film. You may also implicitly or explicitly state whether or not you recommend the film. Make sure to remind the reader of why the film is or is not worth seeing.″

Discussion Board 3
As we learned Philosophy (School of Athens) has several “celebrities” included within the painting, such as Leonardo/Plato, Bramante/Euclid, and Michelangelo/Heraclitus. Create your own “School of Athens” with six figures. Please do not choose six family members or six people from the Washington Commanders, etc. Be diverse in your selection.
Remembering how Raphael had painted a series of themes: Philosophy (also known as the School of Athens), Law, Poetry, Theology. What do you decide to paint about? Politics? Religion? Art? Literature? Music? Who would you include? Be creative. How are they positioned? Where are they? What do they wear, modern or antiquated clothes? What style is it in? Would you pick a more traditional approach, like Raphael, or something more outlandish, like Cubist?
This should be at least two paragraphs. Don’t forget to reply to two classmates.
