Personality disorders originate in adolescence, involve persons with patterns of inner experience and relationship to others that differs markedly from expectations of the culture and that lead to distress. Personality disorders are often comorbid with each other and many other disorders. They involve maladaptive variations of the basic five personalities factors of extraversion, neuroticism, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. They probably involve exaggerations of qualities that were selective for through evolution for their survival value. There are three clusters of personality disorders. Odd-eccentric personality disorders include paranoid personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder, and schizotypal disorder. Dramatic emotional personality disorders include antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, and narcissistic personality disorder. Anxious fearful personality disorders include avoidant personality disorder, dependent personality disorder, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Personality disorders are notoriously resistant to treatment, with most treatments focusing on cognitive interpretations of experience and development of a complex view of relationships and interactions.
