The statement of interest should have the following components:
(1) the name and proper citation of the written piece that you plan to explore in your essay (you
can choose from the list of texts suggested below or find one of your own, as long as it meets the
criteria outlined in the final assignment details) (1-2 sentences);
(2) a brief overview of the piece, why it interests you and why it is significant or timely (3-5
sentences);
(3) a discussion of how the piece you have chosen uses language to reproduce and/or challenge
power, discourses, traditional knowledge and/or representation (3-5 sentences).
Additionally, you should provide an annotated bibliography containing at least two (2) external
scholarly sources (not including course materials or Said’s work).
I have provided the two External Scholarly Sources below
Edward Said’s Claim:
As Edward Said (1979) writes in the introduction to his
book Orientalism, “European culture gained in strength and identity by setting itself off against
the Orient as a sort of surrogate and even underground self” (p. 3). Said also contends that
Orientalist discourse falsely produces the Orient as politically, socially and culturally inferior, so
that the authority and superiority of Western culture can be maintained.
In addition to relating the written piece to edward said’s claim and two external sources, I have also provided source content I would also like you to connect.
