Guide to Structuring your Essay
Please remember that there is no single, correct way to structure any of the questions, rather there are a range of approaches that can be taken to do well in this essay. It is for the student to spell out their argument and part of the mark awarded will on whether or not the student presents their work in accordance with their own argument and structure. Follow the steps below to maximise your result:
a) Answer the Question / Make an argument.
Your essay question asks for a take on a topic or topics. Very early in the essay say how it responds to the question (I use the start). ‘This essay argues that …’ The argument should be a response to the question and if it is a ‘discuss’ question – it will either be arguing for or against the statement or indeed saying that ‘it is complicated’.
b) Present a ‘nutshell’ argument upfront
Explain how the sections of your essay are going to come together in support of your argument.
c) Use signposting
As you go through the different sections in the essay, ‘tie’ them back to your argument with a sentence or two. Make sure the reader always knows why particular material is being covered.
The structure of an essay can thus look as follows:
I. Introduction: the argument in response to the question, an account of what will be contained in the essay (and how this supports the argument).
II. Sections (substantive material based on reading and research) – use ‘signposting’ to explain to the author how points relate to your overall argument.
A short conclusion is generally welcome – this can simply sum up that the material overall supports the argument made. It could also say what it means for say practice or future research (but this is certainly not essential.
