~Heroes and Villains: which characters seem to be important or central? What roles do they play? What do we learn
about them physically, and do those physical descriptions support or challenge any stereotypes about good/beautiful and evil/ugly? What do we learn about our characters’ motivations and desires? Does the novel seem to have a hero? Does it have a villain? Do the values and ethics of our major characters seem to connect with or remind you of any of our
1) explore one of the main elements of the novel from the list of topics on the next page—as for which one, that’s
your choice! I’ve divided the list into general Themes, specific Character studies, and Contexts & Settings, just for some guidance. You can pick from any category!
2) briefly explain how/why you made some of the choices you did for your presentation (for example, why did you
choose these particular colors or images in your artwork to illustrate the Creature’s emotions? Or, why did you choose this specific scene to retell in your fanfic, or to film for your short movie? Why did you think it was important to include these
particular elements or moments?)
3) make at least two connections to our secondary source readings! At least one connection should be to one of our specifically Frankenstein-related secondary sources (including: Shelley herself (that is, her Foreword to the novel),
Young, Hitchcock, Baldick, Wollstonecraft, Polidori); the other might, if you want, come from any of our previous
readings, for example Cohen or Freud or Aristotle. You may do this as creatively as you like – for example, you might include an image of Mary Wollstonecraft in your collage, or display a quote about the uncanny on Victor’s Pinterest
board, or discuss the question of the Creature’s changing appearance (as mentioned in Hitchcock’s essay) in your original
song, rap, lyrical ballad, or spoken-word poetry.
