Woodrow Wilson called for a “peace without victory” in 1917 (Peace Without Victory (Links to an external site.)) but in 1919 he acceded to those who demanded a victory of the “righteous over evil.” Twenty years after the Treaty of Versailles, the Second World War commenced.
There may be parallels to the current war in Ukraine. Some argue that nothing less than the complete evacuation of Ukraine by Russia is acceptable, and that the West should assist Kyiv at all costs. Others warn that an intransigent position could result in nuclear war.
