This module and next module, you are reading of professionals in the field who represent different viewpoints described in Johnson’s text. In this discussion, we are going to discuss the differences between the Levels of Explanation perspective and the Integration perspective. Specifically, please answer the following three questions:
1. How did Dr. Worthington demonstrate a Levels of Explanation approach in his talk on forgiveness?
2. How did Dr. McMinn demonstrate an Integration approach in his talk on Positive Psychology and the church?
3. What did you learn about the distinction between these two approaches to studying psychological phenomena (LOE and Integration) from watching their talks?
Please read the following,

This week we’re going to explore two viewpoints that explain the relationship between psychology and Christianity. I’m going to briefly introduce our week in this presentation. And then you will watch two talks by research scholars who exemplify the levels of explanation viewpoint and the integration viewpoint. The purpose of this week and next is to show you how individuals from different viewpoints discuss and use technological science. This week, you will hear from Dr. Everett Worthington, who conducts research from levels of explanation view. You will also hear from Dr. Mark with men who approaches psychological science from a more of an integrative perspective. As you watch each of these presentations, please take notice of how psychological constructs are discussed and how science and faith or presented through their actual research, you can see how someone from each viewpoint interacts with both science and the Bible. While I know these research presentations are a bit long, I think they’re very important to understanding how someone presents biblical truths and psychological research. These presentations truly show the viewpoints in action. AS you watch Dr. Worthington, who operates largely from a levels of explanation view. Notice how there’s acknowledgement that forgiveness is a biblical concept, but that the Bible is limited in telling us how to forgive. According to Worthington, this is where science and clinical trials come in to help us learn how to forgive. In his presentation, we see a head nod to different fields, being able to give us different ways of explaining and interacting with phenomenon. The crux of the levels of explanations view. This is different from an integration approach which truly uses both science and biblical teaching simultaneously to understand the concept. You can see that, that simultaneous attention reflected, and Dr. McMinn talk while integrations is not really evident and Dr. Worthington. And Dr. Worthington stop. Please take note. The psychological science seems to have its lane as a lane of how-to and measurement. While the Bible has, it’s in of identifying the importance of forgiveness as Christ-like virtue. I hope you enjoy watching these talks this week, both for their contents but also for their approaches to the topics, and as you’re watching, always be thinking of how you believe psychology and Christianity should relate.
