Think of two people having a conversation about a topic. Each has his/her own opinion and tries to convince the other person that opinion is the most valid one. Brainstorm on a topic that interests you. Create a map or bubble chart. Determine about what you have the most to say. Following are some possible topics as well as a website that offers topics. DO NOT CHOOSE an elementary-level topic. I do not want to see comparisons between pets. This is a college-level course.
capitalism vs. socialism
The structure of the comparison/contrast essay can vary. You could list all the attributes of Item A; then list all the attributes of Item B. Or you could list each category of attribute and give examples from Item A and Item B; then move on to the next category. For example, in an essay contrasting communism and democracy, I might choose the following categories: effects on people, effects on economy, and effects on international relations. Then I would discuss Item A’s effect and Item B’s effect on people in one paragraph. Item A’s effect and Item B’s effect on the economy in a second paragraph and so on.
You should plan to use at least one source from the library databases in this essay and aim for a minimum of 600 words. Use MLA style and remember a Works Cited page.
