There are lots of examples of loan words (borrowed exactly), derivatives (modified to look like host language), and cognates (have systematic correspondences of sounds) of these categories in English and in other languages. The video lecture provided many examples of each.
Please supply two examples from different categories named above (e.g., one loan word and one cognate). You may use the internet for help in locating these, but you must cite your source (URL is fine). Your examples must be unique and may not be named in the video. You are welcome to use examples of English loan words into other languages. Please check the discussion before listing to be sure your examples have not been used yet.
N.B. In many modern language courses, e.g., Spanish, the term “Cognate” is used for what we call “Derivatives.” This is a difference in usage particular to that discourse community. Try not to be confused by the different usage of the same term.
