Podcast Reading Response requires you to succinctly summarize, analyze, and
respond to one course reading. You will upload 2 files – a media recording file
(audio) and a word document with your script and bibliography.
You
can choose to respond to one of the following readings:
Papacharissi, Z. (2016). “Affective publics and structures of
storytelling: Sentiment, events and mediality.” Information, Communication
& Society 19(3), pp. 307-324.
Hautea, S., Parks, P., Takahashi, B., & Zeng, J. (2021). Showing
they care (or don’t): Affective publics and ambivalent climate activism on
TikTok. Social Media + Society, 7(2), 1-14.
Singh, R. (2018). “Platform feminism: Protest

Your Podcast/Audio Reading
Response must consist of:

An introduction with brief overview of the article and a
thesis statement*
·
Discussion containing your analysis and response
·
Concluding statement
*Your
thesis statement is not proving a point, rather it is identifying your argument
of how you analyzed and responded to the reading. Think of your thesis
statement as a guide structuring your Podcast/Audio Reading Response for your
reader. This is good practice for your 5-Page Paper due later in the semester.
Possible
questions the analysis portion of your reading response should address:

What claims are being presented in the article?
·
How did the author(s) build their argument?
·
What other secondary ideas emerge from the reading?
·
What theories or concepts did the author(s) reference to
support their argument?
Possible
questions the response portion of the assignment should address:
·
How does the reading relate to CCT109 course themes?
·
How does the reading challenge your pre-existing ideas about
communication technology and everyday life?
·
Was the argument posed by the author(s) persuasive?
These
questions are stating points to help guide your Podcast/Audio Reading Response.
You do not have to answer all these questions. They are prompts to help your
analysis and response to encourage greater engagement with the course material.
You
will build on the skills we have worked on during the practical sessions and
from the Written Reading Response. Active participation in practical will help
familiarize the analytical reading skills required for the Podcast/Audio
Reading Response.
Support
your analysis with examples from the article, either through paraphrasing or
direct quotes. Both paraphrasing and direct quotes must be justified and
explained in your own words. Do not let the author(s) words stand in for your
own! Use your words! Any references – whether paraphrased or directly quoted –
to the reading must have proper citations APA style.
The
Podcast/Audio Reading Response is more conversational than the Written Reading
Response. This is an opportunity to work on your presentation, verbal, and
discussion skills.
The
Podcast/Audio Reading Response must not use any voice filters. Do not
worry about your tech skills or speaking skills – you are not being graded for
a polished professional product. It is the content of your Podcast/Audio
Reading Response that you will be graded on.
Your
podcast can be recorded on your mobile device and edited using Audacity or
GarageBand. Here are some tips and resources for recording on your phone and editing:
