The paper should cover music from the time of slavery in The United States to present. It should cover blues, jazz, music of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and hip hop. Tying events/feeling of the cold war, Vietnam, Wars in the middle east (to include the dixie chicks fall from grace) equal rights, civil rights and the black lives movement.
I must must address an historical problem or controversy, place that problem within its historical and historiographic context, and develop an original thesis that is supported by material culled from primary and secondary sources.
To meet these requirements, the paper must include at least the following elements:
Reference to and critical integration of a set of no less than ten primary source materials;
Reference to and analytical incorporation (or refutation) of the arguments contained in at least four secondary monographs that are considered standard works on the topic you have chosen;
Reference to and reasoned inclusion (or refutation) of the arguments contained in book reviews of your chosen secondary monographs;
Reference to and analytical integration (or refutation) of at least three scholarly articles on your topic by authors other than those who published the secondary monographs.
