Part 1, Literary Analysis (5 points): Metaphor OR Characterization. Choose ONE!
Metaphor: write an analysis of ONE of the metaphors in Their Eyes Were Watching God Download Their Eyes Were Watching God; select from the following prominent metaphors (the horizon, the pear tree, the natural world, gates/thresholds, roads, the porch, mirrors/photographs/reflections, Janie’s hair, Joe’s store, land, mules) or choose your own metaphor.
OR
Characterization: write an analysis of ONE character of your choice. Janie (consider Alice Walker’s definition of a Womanist and Janie as “non-tragic” despite the tragedies she endures) or Pheoby (friendship, audience, listener) or “the porch community” aka background characters merged into one voice, or one of the flawed characters Nanny, Logan, Joe (considering how they’re imprinted with historical oppression that affects who they are and how they act; reflect on Psychoanalytic and Post-Colonial Theories here, also Gender Studies).
Part 2, Visual Literacy (5 points):
Select an Image that represents something in the book. The image doesn’t have to be a literal interpretation–it can be more conceptual. Briefly explain your image in connection to the book. You can use a quote, but not required. Part 2 does *not* need to relate to Part 1, but it can if you wish.
