Rights and Resources-Topic
Assessment Description
Teaching students with disabilities requires knowledge of the law that serves as the foundation of special education, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). There are specific ethical and legal responsibilities involved in working with students with moderate to severe disabilities. Special education teachers are part of the decision-making process regarding the least restrictive environment (LRE) to ensure a free and appropriate education (FAPE) for students with moderate to severe disabilities. It is important for teachers to understand the types of settings that are available to meet the needs of students with moderate to severe disabilities, including those with medical and health care needs.
Create a digital resource for parents/guardians of children with moderate to severe disabilities. The resource should provide basic information related to the rights of students with disabilities and should include a variety of local, state, and national resources that parents/guardians could use to obtain support. Include specific resources that could be helpful to assist non-English speaking parents/guardians.
The digital resource should include the following:
Summary of the basic rights of the parents/guardians, as well as their child, provided through the IDEA procedural safeguards. (150-250 words)
Definitions of FAPE and LRE, and their connection when providing special education services to students. (150-250 words)
Explanation of the legally mandated responsibilities of public schools in providing special education services. (150-250 words)
Descriptions of four types of placement options schools may provide for students with disabilities including an explanation of whether each setting is appropriate to meet the needs of students with moderate to severe disabilities. (250-500 words)
List of six local, state, and/or national agencies or organizations that can offer family support and advocacy for students with moderate to severe disabilities. At least one of the items on the list should provide support for non-English speaking parents/guardians. Include a brief description of how each organization/agency provides support. (150-250 words)
Support the assignment with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
