In Chapter 12, we discovered many new concepts that help explain much of our behavior. Just to make some of these concepts a little more meaningful for you, I would like you to think of examples from your own life. For the concepts below, give me an example and then tell me how it fits with the definition of this concept. (Make sure to use the definition that is given in the textbook.) You will get no credit if you use the examples given in the textbook; I want you to come up with your own! You will also not receive credit if you do not put the explanations in your own words. You are expected to write at least one paragraph for each of the questions.
1) Give an example of an attitude you have towards a specific person, object, idea, or situation, making sure to discuss the affective component, the behavior component, and the cognitive component of this particular attitude. (You need to use these specific terms in your examples.) Make sure to explain how your example of each of these components fit the definitions of these concepts given in the textbook.
2) Give an example of a time when you committed the fundamental attribution error and then explain how this example fits the concept. You will get no credit if you do not explain both the situational and dispositional causes involved, again making sure to use these specific terms in your explanation.
3) Give an example of a time when you experienced cognitive dissonance and changed your attitude or behavior, being very clear what, specifically, did change; then explain how this example fits the concept.
4) Give an example of a time when you acted out of altruism and then explain how this example fits the concept. Make sure to choose someone other than a friend or family member for your example to get credit. If you can’t easily come up with an example, then you get to do something really exciting, which is to act out of altruism this week and make this your example!
Grading Rubric
4 points for a correct example (4 sections x 3pts each = 16 points)
4 points for a correct explanation for #1-3 (12 pts total), and 2 points for the correct explanation for #4. (If you do not explain exactly how your example fits the concept, you will receive no points for this part.)
