For this assignment, please see the list below where you have been given the name of an actual person to investigate. I got assigned the person, Anatole Broyard. The list includes people known for covering up and/or denying their ancestry and assuming another racial identity. Some of these individuals “passed as white,” while others “passed as black” or “passed as Native American.” In a short paper, please describe the person you have been asked to study. What were the person’s actual racial origins, and what racial identity did he or she assume? Explain what the motives for “passing” were in the case of this individual, and for how long and under what circumstances the person chose to pass. What happened to the person — did he or she pass successfully, or was the person exposed? In the end, what were the costs and benefits for the person involved? What does this person’s experience have to teach us about race and race relations in the United States?
