Paper: A Child & Youth Care Approach to Addressing Mental Health Stigma – 20%

This assignment relates to the following Course Learning Requirements:
CLR-1 Acquire skills and knowledge that contribute to successful interactions with individuals with mental health challenges in a multitude of settings such as the classroom, workplace and the wider community.
CLR-2 Identify appropriate resources/tools to use when interacting with individuals who have mental health disorder
CLR-3 Recognize and understand one’s beliefs and attitudes in relation to mental health and how these impact one’s behaviour in settings such as school, work and society
Objective of this Assignment:
Students will analyze and discuss societal challenges and perceptions regarding mental disorders and stigma and develop an understanding of mental health stigma and indicate how this can impact young people with mental health issues and/or illness.
Students will research and describe specific strategies for addressing and reducing mental health stigma, making a direct link to how they can apply these strategies in their child and youth care practice.
Instructions:
Students will write a 4 page paper that defines mental health stigma, identifies the impact that mental stigma can have on young people with mental illness, and describes specific strategies and resources that can be used to address mental health stigma in the school and/or community based settings.
Content/Format:
Headings should be organized as follows:
Introduction: Describe the purpose of the paper and explain to the reader what they can expect in the subsequent sections (1 paragraph).
Defining mental health stigma: Provide a definition of mental health stigma, and describe common stigmatizing attitudes, and common stigmatizing behaviours. Include research to support the information presented (1/2 page)
The impact that mental stigma can have on young people with mental illness: Using research, describe how experiences of mental health stigma can impact a young person’s optimal development, including the impact on psychological, behavioural, social and academic functioning (1 page).
Strategies and resources that can be used to address mental health stigma in the school and/or community based settings: Conducting research using peer reviewed journals, professional websites and professional organizations, present evidence based strategies/resources and/or programs that are used in school or community based settings to address the stigma of mental illness. Select and summarize 2 examples (1 page).
Application to child & youth care practice: Indicate how you will use the information learned through the completion of this assignment in your practice as a Child and Youth Care Practitioner. Your textbook is a good source for this section. Provide 2 specific examples (1 page).
Conclusion: Provide a concise paragraph indicating how combatting mental health stigma can have appositive impact on the young people and families that CYCs work with and the importance of addressing this in CYC practice (1 paragraph).
Section: Include a reference page for your book and other sources used in your research.
Format
Your paper must be typed and double spaced with Times New Roman 12 pt font.
The paper must be at least 3 pages minimum and no more than 5 pages maximum.
Your paper must include a cover page.
This academic paper must be written in the third person.
The paper must include an introduction and conclusion.
