#1 Legislation aimed at protecting people from themselves concerns the individual as well as the public in general. Protective helmet laws are just one example of such legislation. Should individuals be allowed to engage in unsafe activities if they choose to do? Why?
#2: The USA Patriot Act was passed by Congress after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This act expanded the government’s ability to gather information about individuals. The Patriot Act has given officials the increased ability to monitor online activities, gain access to personal and financial information, and monitor phone and email communication. The government must certify that the information to be obtained through the Patriot Act is likely relevant to criminal activity, but does not need to provide proof of any actual wrongdoing.
