The Agency for Health, Research, and Quality (AHRQ) had several guidelines which would support the evidence-based measure to support the D.N.P. project I am working towards. I have recently reevaluated my project course to include increasing inclusion in healthcare for the LGBTQ+ communities. Improving patient safety in primary care settings by engaging patients and families is an important the ensure measures are taken within the healthcare system to create a stronger engagement with LGBTQ+ patients. Ensuring there is care available to reduce exclusion and focus on the disparities faced in this specific communities. This community is often confronted with an increase discrimination, violence, increased mental health including suicidality, anxiety, depression, substance/alcohol abuse, social ostracization, and school avoidance to escape those who hold prejudices against them (Madireddy & Madireddy, 2022). Healthcare systems must investigate the barriers and inequalities the LGBTQ+ communities face and address processes to improve care specific to their needs.
Studies have shown there is a large margin of cultural incompetence for healthcare professionals when addressing the LGBTQ+ communities. It is important to encouraging healthcare systems to focus on increasing education to increase the knowledge, comfort, and cultural competency to increase comfort levels in addressing a variety of health issues faced by the LGBTQ+ community (Gahagan & Subriana-Malaret, 2018). The advanced practice nurse is detrimental to improve the healthcare concerns and perceived barriers to providing care in a non-discriminator fashion and reduce the stigmatism the patients have reportedly felt while receiving healthcare.
Recently, our healthcare system incorporated the ability to customize pronouns for our patients in all medical records. It is important to review the specific pronouns as first steps to increase inclusion for the LTGBQ+ population. It does seem like a small step towards providing care for the LGBTQ+ community but it was a needed improvement. The Code of Ethics obligates and encourages nurses to provide excellent patient care, advocate for the needs of each patient and respect the dignity of each population (Sherman et al., 2021). The LGBTQ+ patients are not receiving these standards of healthcare and it is necessary to advocate for them to receive the best care we can provide by addressing their needs fully and specifically.
