A) China is often cited as having a model education system, but Chu demonstrates that there are many reasons to question its high rank. Using Little Soldiers, describe some of the major problems with Chinese schools and the attempts by the Government to correct them. Your paper’s thesis should include what Americans or American educators can learn from these problems and possible solutions.
B) Little Soldiers contrasts schools that are highly directive and authoritarian with those that are highly permissive and try to integrate more student participation into classroom activities. Using examples from Little Soldiers to define this range, describe your own educational experiences to decide if they were set in a more authoritarian or a more permissive environment. Discuss why or why not the level of permissiveness and authority that you experienced were appropriate.
C) Using Little Soldiers for evidence, decide if Third-culture kids and global nomads really are more diplomatic than the rest of us. Research indicates that Third Culture Kids (aka, “Global Nomads”) “are tolerant of diversity, become skilled observers, and can serve as a model of multicultural education principles because of their expanded world view and exposure to cultural differences” (Gillies, 1998). According to the criteria of who is or is not a global nomad, decide which people in Little Soldiers are global nomads; then decide if they more diplomatic than most people and if so, do those skills seem to accrue from their background? D) Did you ever allow yourself to be bad at math? Show why, in Chu’s account, most Asians would not feel this way about math given cultural priorities.
