You may choose your topic. It should be something of interest to you, but specifically related to the general subject of African-American Music and its history. You may choose an artist or other important person in the field to write about, such as Bessie Smith, Alicia Keys, Miles Davis, Bill Evans or Esperanza Spalding. Many students have chosen instruments to write about (clarinet, electric bass) or a community that has been historically active such as the Fillmore District of the 1950s or the Harlem Renaissance.
