The founding fathers felt that a Consitutional republic was better than a Democracy. Americans did not directly vote for senators for the first 124 years of the Federal Government. The Constitution, as it was adopted state legislatures. Representatives were directly elected. The 17th amendment to the U.S. Constituiton – Direct Election of U.S. Senators.
Democracy is a system of government where the citizens exercise powerof voting. In direct democracy, the citizens as a whoe form a governing body and vote directly on each issue. In a representative democracy the citizens elect representatives from among themselves. America does not do either of these when it comes to the President.
What were the reasons for ths design of government and does it still work (with the change in how Senators are now elected)? What method did the founding fathers establish to handle needed changes? What goverment would best serve our country now? Why?
