Select two separate police departments from anywhere in the country. They do not need to be from the same state, or even the same region–and it is fine to select departments in Oregon. Navigate to each department’s homepage and review their history. For example, the Eugene (OR) Police Department (Links to an external site.) has a “History” section that summarizes significant historical events. Note: The two departments you select should be agencies that share details of their past. If your chosen department does not share this information, you must select other agencies. Then answer the following questions:
Briefly summarize the history of each department.
What issues do the agencies emphasize?
What issues are not mentioned?
Compare and contrast the departments’ reports with the information presented about the history of the policing. Does the history reported seem to “match” with what we know about the evolution of policing in the United States? Why do you think this is the case?
Do you agree with the way the agencies present themselves? What is one thing that you feel the departments could do to improve the way they report their history?
