Explain the purpose and basic framework for an enterprise system
“Enterprise systems (ESs), also known as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, are commercialized information systems that integrate and automate business processes across a firm’s value chain located within and across organizations.” (Chang page 110) “The enterprise system serves as the backbone of the company’s internal business processes and serves as a connection with the external business processes for supply chain and customer relationship management systems.” (Chang page 111) “Enterprise systems are based on relational databases and link many different modules and functions of the firm to give integrated information to the firm’s management and workers throughout the firm.” (Change page 113)
ERP’s could potentially take place of some of your employees, keep your company better organized, more productivity, improved and more accurate record keeping, and maybe even more suitable business planning.
There are a few challenges when it comes to ERP systems. They can be very costly, must receive adequate training for the employees who will be using the system, may cause delays while learning new software, and does the software offer customization to better fit your company’s needs? The users of such software may just be secretarial staff, but also may include production line workers, supervisors, packing and shipping staff. There is no doubt you will have employees who hate the change and think the ‘old way’ worked just as well or even better. “Significant resources were devotes to championing the new software applications, training employees, and rolling out process changes with change management consultants.” (Stykes)
To determine if your company could have a good impact from such enterprise systems, you should consider both advantages as well as the disadvantages. Cost, and time of implementing the system and learning the system are your major disadvantages. Does your company have the time to learn a new system or will it hurt your business to slow production to put the software into place?

A relational database is a place that houses the information, as well as shows how each item is connected (OCI, 2022). Once the complex data is stored in the relational database, it can then be accessed at any necessary time (OCI, 2022). The relational database is the most used (OCI, 2022). A good example of relational database software is Oracle or Access, just to name a few (Roomi, 2021).
Just like with any software, there are pros and cons (OCI, 2022). Some of the pros of having a relational database are speed, security, simplicity, accessibility, accuracy, and lastly multiuser (Roomi, 2021). Some of the cons would have cost, performance, physical storage, complexity, information loss, and structural limitations (Roomi, 2021). I know I mentioned speed under one of the pros but later said the performance is a con (Roomi, 2021). A relational database is good with the effectiveness of moving from database to database, however just like with any software, too many tables can cause the performance of that program to not live up to the expectations of how the program should be (OCI, 2022). A good example of a relational database is an ATM. When a deposit is made, the expectation is for your available balance to reflect that deposit.
Four critical properties make up relational database transactions. They are known as an ACID: atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability (OCI, 2022).
Relational databases have improved to show the strength and growth that this database has to offer (OCI, 2022). The strength of relational databases, cloud database technology, and machine learning is now being built upon by autonomous technology (OCI, 2022).
