Pick three readings assigned for the class for weeks 7 – 10.
One of the readings can be from the recommended readings listed in the syllabus. One can be a short
newspaper article (like under week 9 Rich, nuclear waste; Hansen and Oreskes, nuclear power; and
week 10, Brown, superweeds and Hakin, doubts about GMOs).
Note that there are more recommended readings posted on Gauchospace than listed in the syllabus
under recommended readings. Pick texts that are listed in the syllabus.
For each reading:
– Briefly summarize what it is about
– Highlight the authors main argument
– Briefly discuss what you found relevant about the reading in the context of the overall course content.
Summary paragraph:
Conclude your three short summaries with a brief discussion on how the three texts you choose may
speak to each other or the course overall. They may deal with different topics, but some broader
themes or conclusions may be similar. Or if they are not similar, highlight that.
Each summary will be between 250-400 words long, with another 250 to 400 words for the concluding
paragraph for a total of 1000 – 1600 words max.
As for previous assignments pay attention to the following:
Citations: – put full bibliographical references for texts discussed as title. You can copy the bibliographical reference from the
syllabus.
– when you directly cite a text passage from one of the readings, provide page number (Rogers, p. 15).
Be selective and go for big picture: Read the texts first, then try to summarize and analyze.
GRADING will be based on:
– effort to identify key arguments and synthesize a concluding section from it,
– organization, clarity of writing and grammar.
– Be concise and precise, avoid vague formulations and repetition. Proof-read before turning in.
– Upload electronic copy to Gauchospace as either a pdf or word file!
