n this module #6, you have learned about the legacy of 1776 – The Americn Revolution and how historians throughout American history have differed from each other in how they understand the relevance and meaning of the American Revolution.
In 2019, the New York Times published the 1619 Project as an effort to reframe the founding of America in 1619 with the selling of the first 20 slaves in Virginia rather than in 1776 because slavery was so consequential to the formation and founding of this country. Since 2019, some public schools and districts have adopted this curriculum to highlight the everlasting impact of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans but the Project 1619 has been met with very vocal opposition —starting with former President Trump, Fox News, conservatives, and even historians—who claim that the Project 1619 is misleading, deceptive, and unpatriotic. Since 2019, various conservative red states have passed bans on the teaching of Project 1619 and any other works that aims to centralize race and racism as part of the American national narrative (see bans on critical race theories”
So, depending on what state you live in, the history you learn can be different as night and day.
