In this activity you will apply conflict theory to analyzing pay for student athletes.
(Conflict theorists recognize ways in which social rewards are unequally distributed: Example: race, ethnicity, gender, sex, sexual orientation, citizenship status, age, ability/disability. They focus on oppression: Haves holding the have-nots back to maintain their own elevated status.)
• Think about the different groups who are associated with college basketball and football at your school. In addition to the student athletes, there are the coaches, student fans, and others who are spectators at the games. Using conflict theory, consider the costs, resources, and rewards that are involved with college basketball and football.
Write your answers to the following questions:
Imagine you are explaining conflict theory to a family member outside of the course. Explain how a conflict theorist might understand the issue of pay for student athletes.
Do you think those costs, resources, and rewards fairly distributed?
Do you think student athletes should be paid? Why?
Explain your reasoning, and whether or not conflict theory perspective helped inform your decision making.
