Evidence-Based Family Therapy Paper: Students will write a research paper on the application of a family therapy theory. The paper should use American Psychology Association (APA) style of reference and should incorporate course readings and additional literature and research material (i.e., textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, etc.). You may not use popular magazines (e.g., Psychology Today). You may use the following websites with instructor permission: SAMHSA, NAMI, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, or other “.gov” or “.org” sites. Class PowerPoint lecture notes may not count as a reference.
Choose one evidence-based theory or practice model to research using the Gehart textbook and at least two other academic sources (articles or books). You may choose from the following practice models: Multisystemic Family Therapy, Brief Strategic Family Therapy, Ecosystemic Structural Therapy, Multidimensional Family Therapy, Functional Family Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Open Dialogue, or a different model of your choice (with Instructor approval).
Develop a vignette about a couple or family relational problem. Address age and gender of family members, other relevant demographic information, presenting problem and related history, family dynamics, structural information, and evidence of problematic interaction patterns. Include a discussion of relevant cultural factors, social problems, and the family’s ecological context.
Apply the theory/practice model to the case vignette as follows:
Summarize the theoretical basis of the therapy model, including major constructs, values, and key beliefs.
Provide the clinical rationale and evidence base for using this particular family therapy model with the identified couple/family.
Describe the role of the therapist in working with this couple/family from the identified theoretical perspective.
Discuss what might be challenging about building a therapeutic alliance with this couple/family. Identify specific skills you would utilize to engage this couple/family in treatment.
Describe your conceptualization of the couple/family’s presenting problem using the identified theoretical lens (i.e. theory-informed assessment.)
Identify two theory-specific goals of treatment for the family that reflect the relevant needs/dynamics of the family as identified in the vignette. Provide a rationale for choosing those specific goals that is grounded in your understanding of the goals of the therapy model as identified in the literature review.
Choose two specific interventions from the family therapy model to be used with this family in meeting the goals identified above.
Specifically describe how you would use the interventions with the family and include dialogue if applicable.
What are the expected therapeutic outcomes for the family of each intervention?
Outline a plan to evaluate the family’s progress in treatment. Identify at least one standardized measure that you would use to evaluate treatment effectiveness. Describe in detail how you would implement the measure with the family. How will you utilize your evaluation findings to improve practice effectiveness?
In conclusion, provide a summary of social work practice with this family that addresses the following:
Critique the model by identifying both its strengths and limitations.
Explain a minimum of two ways in which the family therapy model is consistent with social work practice.
Identify how your personal values and/or cultural background might present a challenge and/or influence your work with this family.
Discuss at least two legal and/or ethical considerations in working with this specific family and how you would proceed in fulfilling your legal and/or ethical responsibilities.
