1. The first part of your paper should be a general description of the concert:
Who performed?
What did they perform? Make sure to include the composers’ names as well as the names of the pieces of music. When including the titles, make sure to follow the guide in the Writing About Music handout. NOTE: this is not a list; work these into your paper.
What are the musical eras of the pieces? You may work this in in any part of your paper but must be included. You should have this correct from the concert summary.
Was there a theme to the concert? (i.e. Piano Music from the Romantic Era, Music by Latinx Composers, etc.) NOTE: there is not always a theme, and if there is a theme, it’s often in the title of the concert.
Who/what organization presented the concert?
2. The second part of your paper should be general impressions of the concert:
What is it like to attend an online concert? If you attended a live concert, what was the experience like?
Is this different than live / other online concerts you’ve attended (only if you’ve been to a live concert in the past)? If you attended a live concert, how did it differ from any other concerts you may have attended?
What did you like/dislike about the music? NOTE: this is a different question than the one about the performance. Here I am asking about the composition(s).
What did you like/dislike about the performance? NOTE: this is a different question than the one about the music. Here I am asking about the performers’s interpretations.
3. The third part of your paper should focus on one specific composition (and composer) from the concert:
What is notable about this piece?
This can be how it fit into history/culture, but should also be about the musical details. This as an opportunity to apply your music vocabulary.
Make sure to discuss at least two of the six elements of music here.
What period in music history is this piece from? If you are unsure of this, check the year it was written and reread the Musical Style chapter in Kamien (p. 54).
What is your reaction to the music?
Did the performers do anything notable? What did you think of their interpretation?
The concert reflection is an opportunity to apply the concepts you have learned with analyzing music. If you are having difficulty understanding the assignment, stop by my office hour on Mondays at 9am-10am via Zoom, or pose the question in the Got a question? discussion board.
