In this assignment, I acquired the role of charge nurse on a
medical-surgical unit in Sentinel Hospital. While completing the five
simulations, I was able to practice differentiating patient acuity, assigning
patients to a nurse based on their experience, and appointing patient care
technicians to assist with caseloads. As patient conditions changed, modifying
staff assignments were essential in order to provide efficient safe care.
the virtual simulation the goal was to observe patient acuity from scenarios
given and decide which nurse could provide adequate care based on his or her
experience, case load, and efficiency. Each patient scenario would discuss the current
diagnosis, labs, vital signs, and mental status. The charge nurse would then
use knowledgeable judgment to decide which client would require the most
attention and services from medical staff.
The charge nurse was responsible for deciding each patients’ acuity,
creating assignments for each nurse, and determining which patient scenario
needed extra assistance.
The simulation provided three experiences that could be implemented in
current practice. The first experience was assigning a certain patient to a
The second experience that is applicable is assigning care technicians
where they are needed.
Lastly, being able to differentiate the variances in acuities without
directly affecting your team and patients’ safety was impactful.
