Can choose between an essay discussing the role of either “red meat consumption” or “alcohol consumption” on disease risk/health.
You are expected to conduct a thorough review of the scientific literature and provide an overview of research in these areas. Essays can focus on one specific disease or multiple. You can then sum up the evidence and make a conclusion based on the literature.
The essay has a limit of 3000 words, excluding abstract, keywords, highlights, tables and references. Each essay should include an abstract, general introduction, main body, future prospects and limitations, conclusion and references. It is essential that the essay is not copied directly from the literature or the internet.
Your essay will have the following standard components (a template can be found in the files folder:
Abstract (10%) – approximately 350 words to summarise what is in your essay. An abstract never includes references or figures/tables.
Keywords and highlights (5%) – state six key words which reflect the main points of the essay, and provide four statements that reflect the main ideas of the essay. (No references, diagrams or tables). Highlights should be concise.
Introduction (15%) – to set the context of the field reviewed. References must be cited. Include a description of your methodology (which search engines/databases and key terms did you use?)
Body (40%) – set your arguments (use subheadings where appropriate– to highlight the main areas of your essay. These are important, as they help the reader to navigate and understand your essay). References must be cited throughout the text.
Future prospects and limitations (10%) – include what are the prospects for the future and where might research on this topic be heading, and short comings currently exist?
Conclusions (10%) – Based on your reading of the literature, what is your view on time-restricted eating as a means of weight management? This section should include your personal critical comments and refer back to key points from the body of the essay. Do not include references – no “new” information should be presented i.e. do not refer to information that has not already appeared in the body of the essay. Do not include figures or tables.
References – in-text citations must follow a numerical format e.g. [5].
Figures/Tables – Optional. The use of figures and/or tables can be used in your essay to complement your writing. These must not be drawn by hand (they should be created electronically). Cite the references you have used to create the tables and figures.
Overall quality of writing and argument (10%).
