Analysis and Critique of Traditional Economic Models Assignment
Reference
Who Cooked Adam Smith’s Dinner?: A Story of Women and Economics by Katrine Marcal. The
book reviews many traditional economic models. You will work with one of your choice. It is a
very interesting read, I highly recommend you read it in its entirety – especially if you are interested
in economics (it is a fascinating subject!).
Goal
Think critically about, and propose updates to, traditional economic models that often do not
consider the decisions women in the economy make every day, the critical contributions women
make to our economy, or the validity of the rational decision maker.
Instructions
Summary
Choose one traditional economic model Marcal criticizes in her book. Summarize the model and
the criticisms she addresses, focusing on her observations with regard to women in the economy.
Proposal
Propose an alternative model to the traditional one being criticized. This is your opportunity to
be creative! You can design this to incorporate any elements you would like, including any that
Marcal covers, any that we have used in this class, and any elements that you come up with on
your own. Make sure your proposal incorporates at least one element that you have designed
yourself (not from the text or class models).
Your proposal may consist of updates to the current model, or may be an entirely new model,
depending on the topic you cover and how creative you get!
Submitting your Assignment
You will turn in this assignment in stages. All submissions will be done on Canvas through the
“Research & Analytical Assignments” module.
• Summary Draft
• Summary and Proposal Draft
• Peer Review
• Final Turnitin Submission
As part of your final submission you should include a works cited page. It is not required to use
additional sources beyond the Who Cooked Adam Smith’s Dinner text, but if you do, they should
be included in your Works Cited.
In total your assignment should be 3-5 pages, double-spaced. You may use either MLA or APA
format.
As usual, if you have any questions at all please let me know. If you are not sure whether you are
on the right track, it is easiest just to check with me.
