This weeks topic? Psychological Disorders in Film
Over the years, Hollywood has created many movies about psychological disorders. Unfortunately, they are mostly made for entertainment and rarely portray the illness accurately. Sometimes they even perpetuate incorrect stereotypes about mental illness. Thus, the goal of this assignment is to choose a film from the list below, and watch it from a psychological perspective, analyzing its portrayal of the disorder. Even if you’ve seen it before, watch it again! You’ll be watching it differently this time, looking for evidence of a disorder and determining its accuracy. Then, join the discussion to share your observations with your peers!
Movie Options:
Sybil (2007)
Fight Club (1999)
Girl, Interrupted (1999)
The Soloist (2009)
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Black Swan (2010)
Shutter Island (2010)
As Good as It Gets (1997)
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Rain Man (1988)
Welcome to Me (2015)
Infinitely Polar Bear (2015)
NOTE: Most of these films can be found on various platforms like Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube. But, don’t forget you also have free options with the HCC Library, as well as the public library in your county.
Initial post: Answer ALL three question prompts:
Which movie did you watch? Did you enjoy it? Why or why not?
What disorder do you think this movie was portraying? Provide evidence from the movie (specific examples) to support your conclusion.
Do you think this movie accurately portrayed the disorder? Or did you find that Hollywood dramatized or stigmatized the disorder? Explain. Provide examples.
For your two reply posts, deepen the analysis in a meaningful way (e.g. provide additional evidence/examples, present a different perspective, provide additional factual information about disorders to show why a movie did/didn’t portray it correctly, etc.)
