Underground Man may be contradictory, vain, egotistical, and perhaps even insane

Underground Man may be contradictory, vain, egotistical, and perhaps even insane. Nevertheless, he has been very influential in literature, philosophy, psychology, and history. Why? What can we learn from this character and his ideas? Can it be that there is genius even in what some consider the wicked?
Using Underground Man as a reference point, please write a six page essay on one of the following topics:
Do we need a hero to tell us what is correct? As a society, should we accept the logic of an anti-hero? Why or why not?
The Underground Man abhors the way in which progressive thinkers of his era worship reason, but he does not necessarily totally reject reason outright. Discuss his attitude toward reason and logic. What value does he assign to logical, rational thinking, and how does he make use of it?
Some critics see the Underground Man as insane, while others see him as a fairly lucid—if maladjusted—observer of society and his place within it. What of his morality? Discuss the concept of good and evil and its relationship to Underground Man’s philosophy and actions.
In your discussion, you may want to quote or paraphrase directly from Notes from Underground. If you do so, please use MLA format. That format is located in The Prentice Hall Reference Guide. Also, follow these guidelines to build your arguments.

Make certain that your thesis states the topic and asserts something specific and significant about it. Underline the thesis, which should be the last sentence in your introductory paragraph.
Your topic sentences should point backward in that they prove part of the thesis, and they should also point forward in that they are a predictor of what will be discussed in particular paragraphs.
Check for coherence in your paper. Link your ideas together by using transitions and/or inserting phrases or subordinate clauses when appropriate.
Your conclusion should drive home the main idea of the essay and summarize key concepts that you want your reader to take away from your essay.
