Please answer THREE questions. Each answer should not be less than 300 words in length. Please make a note of the
word length at the end of your response to each question.Question 1. Based on the articles that you have read by Elaine Jenks and Subini Annamma,
discuss how these ethnographies have contributed to strengthening your understanding of
dis/ability. Based on their ethnographic research findings discuss TWO specific points in your
response, selecting one point from each article (6 points)
Things to keep in mind while answering the above question:
 Begin your response by discussing how understandings of dis/ability are
shifting from framing this solely as a medical issue to increasingly
understanding this as socially constructed;
 Do NOT draw both your points about what you’ve learned about dis/ability from
the same reading. Please remember to include the name of the author/s in your
examples;
 Avoid using extensive quotes from the article;
 You could also include an additional point based on the film ‘Unspoken’ for
1 point of extra credit;
 Please remember to include contextual references in your response, i.e. the
city/country where the ethnographic research was conducted.
Question 2. Drawing on the articles by Connie Wun and Dario Valles, discuss how these
ethnographies have contributed to strengthening your understanding of the effects that racial
disparities have on the lives of children. Based on their ethnographic research findings discuss
TWO specific points in your response, selecting one point from each article (5 points).
Things to keep in mind while answering the above question:
 Begin with a discussion on what you understand by the term the ‘afterlife of slavery’.
 Please Do NOT draw both your points from the same reading. Also remember to
include the name of the author/s in your examples;
 Remember to contextualize each of your examples in terms of the author’s larger
ethnographic study.
 You could also include an additional point based on the film ‘The Mask You Live
In’ for 1 point of extra credit;
 Please remember to paraphrase the authors while writing up your response.
 Avoid using extensive quotes from the articles.
3. One of the main goals of this course on ‘Ethnographies of Childhood’ is to allow you to
develop an appreciation of the important contributions made by ethnographic methodologies and
ethnographic research in the study of children and childhood. Ethnographic research shares
children’s experiences through stories with these detailed narratives often provide a critical
lens to frame and engage mundane aspects of children’s lives (aspects that we either disregard or
often view as unimportant, like sharing food during school lunchtime).
For this third question, I am interested in knowing more about how you learning in this course
has helped you develop an appreciation of ethnographies both as a research method and a
research narrative. In your response, please discuss TWO separate aspects of how learning
about ethnographies have helped strengthen your critical understanding of children and
childhoods.
Irrespective of what you choose to focus on, do keep in mind that your response should highlight
how ethnographic research offers a ‘critical lens’, i.e. it is not enough to say that I never knew
about ethnographic research and that I learned about different topics through this course.
Things to keep in mind while answering the above question:
1. Draw on the course readings to substantiate your discussion. You can draw on the
conceptual toolbox, if you’d like.
2. Do not draw on the same article for both of your critical elements.
3. Do not use lengthy quotes from the article to make your point. Keep in mind that I am
looking for a more reflective response. i.e. I want to know how this course (including
articles/films/assignments) helped you appreciate ethnography and the critical perspective it
offers.
4. For extra credit, please also include a few lines on your experience with either the Annotated
Bibliography exercise and/or the Observation Exercise.
