Make sure to read all the materials!!!
Overview:
Teach the instructor about a process that you find interesting. This process can be something from your major or from outside school, but it should be a process that you think might interest the instructor.
The process can be one with human actors (as in a process people complete, for instance “sequencing DNA” or “brewing India Pale Ale”) or it can be a natural process (one that occurs without human involvement, for instance “photosynthesis”).
Please avoid processes that are banal, like “making a peanut butter sandwich.” Writing about such a commonly known process will prove much more difficult than picking a lesser known process.
The best topic–one that will help you achieve the following assignment requirements–will be a process that could affect the life of the intended audience. For instance, “brewing IPA” might save the reader money while also helping him relax after a hard week of grading papers, and “photosynthesis” might provide the basis for most life on earth, including the reader’s next meal.
The final draft of your procedural description should be less than 550 words. This maximum length will force you to make decisions about what types of content to include, and in what level of detail. Make those decisions with your specific audience in mind; specifically, think about what the audience can be assumed to already know and what will need to be explained. Include a final word count at the top of your document.
Assignment’s Rhetorical Context:
Audience: John Larison, your instructor.
Content: You decide
Goals: 1) To teach your audience about a process that you find compelling. 2) To compel your audience in the first paragraph and to hold your audience’s attention to the last sentence. 3) To write a document that is free of punctuation, grammar, typo, and paragraphing errors. 4) Produce a document that adheres to the grading rubric.
Assignment’s Formatting Requirements:
Point of View: 3rd person
Maximum Word Count: 550
Minimum Word Count: None (Include a total word count at the top of the document)
Sources: None required. If you use sources, cite them at the end using the format of your field (APA, MLA, etc)
Visuals: None required. If you use a visual, include a caption that helps your audience understand what it sees.
Important Note About Point of View:
You are not to teach the instructor to do this process, which would require writing in the second-person point of view, often called the “command voice.” (“Untie the thread. Now, tie a new knot.”) You are to teach the instructor about this process, using the third person point of view.
Important Note About Document Cleanliness:
This assignment is intended to challenge you to write a professional document that is free of punctuation, grammar, typo, and paragraphing errors. On the final draft, students will lose one point per error. Adjust your editing process as necessary to ensure you’ve located and corrected all punctuation, grammaluvr, typo, and paragraphing errors.
