Your goal is to plan and deliver a 10-minute presentation about your agency. There will be specific content your instructor expects you to discuss, but beyond that, what you choose to present is up to you (specialized units, history, number of members, location, demographics of city/municipality, opportunities available, interesting facts, etc.). Your presentation should be well-researched, interesting to your audience (your peers), and related to the specific agency. You’ll start by composing a “speech outline” or presentation plan for this assignment. Remember, a speech outline is like a blueprint for building a house; it’s necessary to plan what you’re going to present before you develop your digital slideshow or determine your supporting presentation aids. Required information
Your speech outline and the resulting presentation must include the following:
Introduction, with an attention-getter and goal(s) clearly stated to the audience, that includes the agency you chose and why, and how you conducted your research and/or interviews (if you could find appropriate individuals, like recruiters, to interview—either in person, via electronic means, or by phone). Remember, your text clearly outlines the four points expected in an introduction: attention-getter, listener relevance link, speaker credibility, and thesis statement. Include these components in your presentation plan and when you present.
Body which includes interactivity with the audience like posing questions, having them engage with the lesson by raising hands or providing examples. Remember, you are channeling your “animated” speaker style that was discussed in Chapter 15: Delivery. Include the following content (and, of course, you should add more content that you feel would be interesting to your audience of peers to help round out your 10 minutes):
A thorough explanation about the agency: where it’s located, the services it provides, the community it serves, and any other important or interesting information you have found through your research.
A discussion about how the agency addresses/utilizes one of the nine Police Sector Council competencies introduced in Module 1 (consider finding an example from a news story where a key competency was demonstrated by a member/unit or the entire organization).
An analysis of professionalism within the agency. This might include examples from the agency that demonstrate professionalism or policies in place to ensure professionalism. Look into programs they’ve initiated (e.g., community policing-based programs, youth-based programs).
Answers to these questions: Why do you want to apply to this agency? Why do you want to be a police officer?
Conclusion containing required elements discussed in Chapter 12: Organizing Your Speech, including thesis re-stated, main points summarized, calls to action/clincher, and asking questions to measure learning.
Once you’ve written your speech outline, thoroughly edit it to make sure it’s clear. Then, submit to the Canvas dropbox provided one week prior to your presentation.
