You have been asked to analyze the potential impact of the availability of water in the future, with specific reference to the water use requirements for almonds and table grapes. Projections are that climate change will impact the future availability of water, so projections on the magnitude of the impacts of climate change would be relevant to his decision.
Mr. wants you to write a 3-4 page report that includes the following:
(1) A description of the water requirements to grow table grapes and almonds (see U.C. Davis extension reports)
(2) A description of the possible impact of climate change on the following: (1) water availability (e.g., rainfall frequency and amounts) and costs and (2) changes in average temperatures and temperature variability (variations across seasons and times of day) in the Central Valley.
(3) A description of potential restrictions on water usage for agriculture, including the impact of Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). Be sure to briefly discuss the relevant provisions of SGMA.
(4) Summary of the potential impact of changes in water availability and cost on the feasibility of growing table grapes or almonds in the Central Valley.
