We discussed the power of communities and networks and looked at some examples of how people have come together online to form a community around shared identities or interests. Because communities attract loyal and dedicated members, businesses and organizations around the world have recognized the importance of such communities. Developing online spaces for people to come together is now big business. Facebook, for example, purchased the photo-sharing social media app Instagram for more than $700 million in 2013. Now, it’s your turn to play the role of developer and convince a group of (imaginary) investors why they should give you $100 million or more for an online community that you plan to create and develop.
Develop a multimedia presentation in which you will outline a New Media venture and explain to a group of investors why it could be the next big thing online. You’ll need to explain what makes it interesting and compelling, who your target audience is, and how you will turn your New Media venture into a community for your users. This venture will use what you have learned during this course to create a community for a group of your choice. You will need to explain how that New Media venture will create an online community, attract new members, and sustain itself over the long term.
PART ONE:
In this assignment, you will create a proposal for your final presentation. This proposal will contain several parts:
•    Identify the group you would like to target. Be specific. “Americans” or “women” is too broad. “Fans of Stanley Kubrick movies” however would be appropriate and narrow enough.
•    Identify the New Media venture you feel would best reach this audience, such as a social media site, a dating site, a message board, an app—really anything. Be creative!
•    Briefly explain in ONE paragraph why you feel that this New Media venture would appeal to the group you identified in step 1 and would help to form a community.
After completing this proposal, you will also need to identify some sources that you plan to use to help you develop your presentation.
•    Submit an annotated bibliography, such as books, journal articles, or articles from reputable magazines and websites in which you research your selected group and the concept of online communities.
•    For each entry, explain what you learned from the resource and also be sure to explain how the resource will help you to develop your ideas about an online community for this group.
Your essay must meet the following criteria:
•    Cite the text, specified readings, and research (with page numbers) and reference it at the end of the essay.
•    Write in APA style using correct grammar and spelling.
•    Identify five college-level sources and evaluate them thoroughly by summarizing their main ideas and evaluating their relevance to the project.
PART TWO:
New media holds the power to bring people together as communities. Businesses and organizations around the world have recognized the importance of such communities, and developing online spaces for people to come together is now big business. In your Proposal and Annotated Bibliography, you selected a topic for a multimedia presentation proposing a New Media venture that will use what you have learned (during this course) to create a community for your chosen group. Now it’s time to present what you have learned as a multimedia presentation to potential investors in your new media venture to convince them why your new media venture will succeed.
To help you think about how you might present a pitch for your new media venture, you may want to review pitches that entrepreneurs have offered on the TV Shark Tank such as this one, Cate App (Links to an external site.) [Video file, 11:07 minutes]
This assignment requires you to create a multimedia presentation. Imagine that you are presenting a pitch to investors to convince them to fund your new media product. Your multimedia presentation may be presented in the form of a slideshow using presentation software such as PowerPoint.
Writing Requirements:
•    An introduction providing an overview of your topic and your new media venture. Why should investors be interested in your product or service?
•    A discussion of who your audience will be and why they need your product or service. What do you know about the audience’s demographics? How will you use what you know to tailor your product or service to their needs and their expectations about new media? What research supports the need for this product or service?
•    An analysis of how your new media venture will build a community. What elements will help it succeed? How can you use what you’ve learned about communities to make your product or service more effective?
•    An identification of at least one ethical concern that might arise from your new media venture and an analysis of how you plan to address that concern. Some potential issues might include the potential for cyberbullying, the digital divide, catfishing, etc.
•    A conclusion that sums up your product or service and tries to convince investors to finance you.
