Use the News Media Journal resource located in the files as a guide to prepare a news media journal. In your news media journal, you must examine different ways news media outlets cover the same political issues or political news stories.
Select three political issues that are currently political news stories with widespread media coverage. National political issues are ideal in order to meet all the assignment requirements. Check with your instructor to approve your selections.
Select three news media outlets covering each of the political issues you selected. Major news sources include ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, NPR, PBS (PBS NewsHour, Frontline, Washington Week),
and other news sources appropriate to the assignment. Try to select news
sources that have various political viewpoints, in order to get the full
picture of an event, not just one side.
Follow the coverage of each story on three of the news media sources you selected daily for five days. Watch, listen, and read how each news media outlet covers the stories you selected. Note: you may use the same three news media sources for all three political issues and news stories. You may choose to explore more news media outlets in your media journal by selecting different news media outlets for each of the three stories.
Record your observations of each outlet’s coverage, including
1.Observe language used during coverage of the issue, and whether the tone is neutral, positive, or negative. What is the theme of the discussion?
2.Measure the time spent covering the issue for video and television, or word count for websites and print newspapers.
3.Identify contributors of opinions or commentary on the issue such as elected officials, political candidates, political pundits, or other journalists.
Complete the table and reflection below. When your observations are complete, write a 250-350-word reflection on your experience at the end of this document.
